The traffic safety at railway crossings is a major challenge. The safety requirements are extremely high, as the effects of an unsafe situation can be fatal. The consideration of real-time information therefore increases the reliability and traffic safety of such railway crossings.
In principle, there are two types of safety systems: on the one hand, light signal systems that warn road users of approaching trains with flashing lights, and on the other hand mechanical safety devices, such as barriers, that restrict access to the railway track. Solutions for increasing safety at railway crossings interpret the actual situation on the basis of captured images and are able to detect unsafe situations and thus send out warnings in real time if necessary.
Examples of unsafe situations are: crossing red lights, stopped vehicles on the track, pedestrians or cyclists crossing with approaching rail vehicles, etc.
