The importance of a safe school environment

Around schools, traffic safety is about much more than speed alone. Children walk, cycle, cross streets and interact with traffic in complex environments where visibility, predictability and calm traffic flow are essential.

Zone 30 areas play a key role in reducing accident severity and stopping distances, but they are most effective when combined with a broader approach — including safe school routes, protected crossings, access control and well-organized drop-off zones.

To effectively enforce these zones, route (or section) controls have proven highly effective. A large-scale study by Macq and PoliVisu found that two years after implementing such controls, speeding violations dropped by up to four times. Section controls are therefore a powerful tool to ensure the safety goals of 30 zones are consistently met.
