Les contrôles de trajets et leur
importance pour notre société.

Smart cameras store a huge amount of data every minute. Originally this data comes in as one big mess, but put a decent back-office system behind it and what do you get as a result? Indeed, an enormous amount of metadata.

I'm sure many of you will know what we're talking about when we drop the word "metadata", others amongst you will probably shout out loud "meta-what?".

To put it very simply, metadata is data that describes a huge amount of data. In this specific example, metadata can be license plates, the type of cars or the colour of the cars.

Les contrôles de trajets et leurs effets

In Belgium there is a series of route checks throughout the country. An ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) camera is placed at the beginning and the end of this distance for over approximately 4 or 5 kilometres. If you drive too fast, this will be recorded by these cameras.

Research done by Macq & PoliVisu has shown that 2 years after the start of the route checks, there are up to 4 times less speeding violations within the given distance.

A general analysis of a large number of route checks within a 70 km/h zone shows a clear decrease in the number of overspeeding drivers & fined offenders. In the long term there are 8% speeding drivers in the beginning, with only 2% remaining at the end of the study. If, on the other hand, we look at mid-2017 and mid-2018, we can see a brief increase in the number of offences. This has to do with the installation and commissioning after homologation of a series of new average speed measurement areas.

Les coulisses de la caméra de l'ANPR

A single ANPR camera records millions of vehicles every year. Number plate recording occurs when a vehicle passes in the field of view of an ANPR camera and that camera is able to read the license plate clearly.

You can imagine that a smart camera is not only able to read license plates. Everything that is recorded on screen is readable. All that is needed is a good back-office system. A back-office provides the possibility to convert all data recorded by the camera to metadata. Such as reading license plates, detecting who is over-taking a car when prohibited, which is driving too fast in a certain zone, which is driving through a red light, you name it. There are therefore many possibilities with the same data.
