Since the introduction of Macq's Average Speed Enforcement in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw two years ago, the municipality has seen remarkable improvements in road safety. Previously, the area reported around 60 accidents annually. Today, that number has dropped to just 33, demonstrating the significant impact of Macq's system in improving road safety.

Minimal Fines and High Compliance

Despite the broad deployment of trajectory controls, the number of fines issued remains exceptionally low. In 2023, only 0.10% of vehicles passing through were recorded speeding—just 1 in every 1,000 drivers. In the 30 km/h zones, compliance is even more impressive. Out of 80,000 vehicles passing through, only 1 fine was issued, which means just 0.001% of drivers exceeded the speed limit.

Broad Coverage Across the Municipality

Macq's Average Speed Enforcement has been strategically deployed across Sint-Pieters-Leeuw to ensure comprehensive traffic monitoring. The municipality now operates:

  • 3 trajectory controls in 70 km/h zones
  • 7 trajectory controls in 50 km/h zones
  • 1 trajectory control in a 30 km/h zone on Depauwstraat

This strategic placement ensures optimal traffic management and enhances overall road safety in various areas.

Clear Signage and High Acceptance

Mayor Jan Desmeth confirms that introducing trajectory controls was the right decision for the municipality. A key factor in the system’s success is the extensive effort put into clear communication and signage. Large road signs, ground markings, and speed displays make it impossible for drivers to miss the trajectory controls. As Mayor Desmeth notes, "It’s an honor for us to ensure that the controls are clearly indicated. It’s not about issuing fines; it’s about safety and livability."

Few Complaints and No Legal Appeals

The public reception of Macq's Average Speed Enforcement has been overwhelmingly positive, with very few complaints. Only 0.4% of fined motorists filed an objection, and in 2024, not a single case was taken to the police court. This demonstrates the transparency and fairness of the system, reinforcing its effectiveness and community support.

A Model for Road Safety

The success of Macq’s Average Speed Enforcement in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw serves as a model for other municipalities aiming to improve road safety. By combining strategic placement, clear signage, and a focus on safety rather than fines, the municipality has achieved outstanding results. This case proves that when implemented correctly, Macq's Average Speed Enforcement can significantly contribute to safer roads and better quality of life for everyone.
