Wallonia has recently activated two new section controls, bringing the total number in the region to three. In comparison, Flanders already has more than 100 active section control zones, significantly contributing to improved road safety.

But just how effective are these average speed enforcement systems? A recent study conducted by the VIAS Institute analyzed the impact of section controls in Flanders, and the results speak for themselves:

80% reduction in speed violations in areas where section controls are implemented.

60% decrease in serious accidents, leading to fewer injuries and fatalities.

The Need for More Section Controls Across Belgium

These figures demonstrate the undeniable effectiveness of section control technology in promoting safer driving habits. While Flanders has made significant progress in deploying these systems, Wallonia still lags behind, with only three operational zones. Expanding the use of average speed cameras throughout the country could drastically improve traffic safety, reduce accidents, and save lives.

The message is clear: Belgium needs more section controls—not just in Flanders, but also in Wallonia!
