Road mortality: a global issue

Today, we introduce the United Nations (UN) Streets for Life program, the movement for safer roads.

Macq, as a recognized player in Smart Mobility and Road Safety, naturally supports this UN initiative and strives to make a positive contribution to it, by making our world's roads safer.

Every year, the staggering toll of road-related fatalities claims the lives of 1.19 million people, leaving countless others with severe injuries. This pandemic disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries, bearing over 92% of incidents.

Even more disheartening is that our youth, aged between 5 and 29, are most affected by road crashes. It is the main cause of early death. Many of these incidents occur while commuting to and from school.

In response to this urgent global issue, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, in collaboration with JCDecaux, with the support of Saatchi & Saatchi, launched a worldwide campaign under the motto "Make a Safety Statement".

Over the next two years, from 2023 to 2025, this initiative will unfold across 80 countries and 1000 cities on billboards, bus shelters, and bike-share programs, with a strong presence on social media.

"Make a Safety Statement" represents a call to action, amplifying the #StreetsForLife global message of the New Decade of Action for Road Safety, aiming to halve the number of road-related victims by 2030.

Celebrities participate to this initiative

The campaign naturally takes into account the importance of influential personalities in the transmission of a global message.

It's therefore with the assistance and public support of stars such as Kylie Minogue, Youssou N'Dour (Singers), Novak Djokovic (Tennis), Naomi Campbell (Actress), Charles Leclerc (Formula 1), Ousmane Dembele, Didier Drogba (Football) etc. and others that the message is relayed publicly, all over the world.

The influence of stars, social networks and the Internet can be beneficial in communicating this message, and Macq is doing its part by presenting this program, which it actively supports.

“I drive slow”, ‘I wear a seat belt’, ‘I wear a helmet’, ‘I don't text and drive’, ‘I don't drive under influence’, ‘I don't drive tired’... So many quotes to take into account urgently, starting today, to protect your life and that of others on the roads which remain one of the most dangerous environments.

We support all the measures proposed by the United Nations and their targets for reducing road deaths. We are also campaigning for a reduction in speed on the roads and for 30 km/h zones in city-centres, which have already led to a significant reduction in the death rate in Europe in recent years.
